Aphantasia: The opposite

hyperphantasia

Hyperphantasia is the opposite condition to aphantasia, where mental visual imagery is not present. Hyperphantasia is characterized as having an extremely vivid mental imagery. Hyperphantasia is more common than aphantasia. An individual with hyperphantasia has mental imagery that looks real, as though the image in right in front of them. An estimated 2.5% of the population has hyperphantasia.

There are differences between hyperphantasia and eidetic memory, more commonly called photographic memory. The condtions are similar although each has their own characteristics. People with photographic memory can remember details of things that have happened in the past, while individuals with hyperphantasia can expand on that imagery and visualize more than the past. Those with hyperphantasia are also able to imagine scents, sounds, and more.
